BringinghomebabycoverLamaze International has just released the newest addition to their online learning modules available to consumers everywhere. Bringing Home Baby is the eighth course to be released since the Online Parent Learning Center was introduced in July 2014.

Written by Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators, the objectives of this informative class are to:

  • Build confidence in parenting skills
  • Understand basic normal newborn behavior and support a child’s natural development
  • Identify warning signs and know when to call the pediatrician
  • Know ways to calm a newborn
  • Identify community resources that can help parents during the transition to parenthood

Using interactive images, community building discussion groups and video presentations by experts in the field, this e-learning course covers all the practical items that new parents frequently seek information on, including safe sleep, choosing the baby’s health care provider, establishing routines, swaddling, car seats and more.  Additionally, this online course covers topics that often bring up strong emotions and opinions such as vaccines and circumcision with tact and sensitivity.

While reviewing the course for this post, I recognized that the “Bringing Home Baby” online course would be a great item to purchase for grandparents, family and other caregivers who will be taking care of the new baby as well.  Best practices in baby care have changed since today’s grandparents had their own children.  New parents will be assured that those family members who might be doing some babysitting and spending time with the littlest family member will be up to speed on safe, contemporary, care techniques.  They will have a better understanding of why the new parents might be doing things differently than previous generations.  Participating in this online course helps them to receive evidence based information and parents can feel more comfortable knowing everyone is on the same page.

New parents have a lot of questions about taking care of their newborn.  They want to be assured that they are doing everything right. Every care-taking activity is often researched and Googled so that it can be done correctly.  While I like to assure new parents that when they a have a one day old baby, they are one day old parents and they are everything that the baby needs right at that moment, there is still a lot of pressure with the millennial generation to “get it right.”

Being able to view these skills and information before the baby comes is a valuable tool.  Having continued access to the course after the baby arrives allows them to review the information and clarify any points that they have questions on, now that they have a new baby in their arms.

This is a great course to consider for families that are not able to attend in-person classes.  Additionally, this course is a great supplement even for those families who did attend a local class with a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator.  I know I am challenged to cover all the important topics regarding parenting and caring for a newborn in the limited amount of time that I have in class.

Consider letting your families know about this useful resource and all the Lamaze International online classes available to them.  Remember, all families can take the “Prepared for Pregnancy” class, designed to be taken in the first trimester, for free, compliments of Lamaze International.
